Pre-AP English II
This course is not an AP class; rather, it is an honors level English II class designed to help students prepare for AP English III.
AP English III- Language and Composition
This course combines the study of American Literature with the study of non-fiction prose. There will be a focus on close reading, rhetorical techniques, author's purpose, and effective writing. According to the College Board, this course will help you, "Strengthen the effectiveness of your writing through close reading and frequent practice at applying rhetorical strategies, applying information from source texts, and writing arguments." At Heritage High School, AP English III is taken concurrently with AP U.S. History and will run on an A/B, full year schedule for the 2013-2014 school year.
AP English IV- Literature and Composition
This course combines the study of British Literature with the study of fiction, both prose and poetry. According to the College Board, "students can deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students should consider a work's structure, style, and themes, as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone." This course is a semester long course, and while it is not required for students to take AP English III, it is highly recommended.
